Boys Soccer vs. Living Word Lutheran
Matias Dermond scored five goals to lead the University School boys’ soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Living Word Lutheran in a Midwest Classic Conference game played Wednesday, October 4th at Living Word Lutheran School in Jackson.
The Wildcats overwhelmed their hosts, outshooting the Timberwolves 42-2 in the contest. Payton Van Den Heuvel had little challenge in recording his eighth shutout of the season. He made just two saves, one in each half. At the other end of the field Living Word Lutheran’s goalie, Will Poellot, was far busier; he stopped 14 of the 19 shots USM put on goal.
“It is obvious to all,” said Jock Mutschler, USM’s head coach, “with a 42-2 advantage in shots, that the lads dominated the day. Payton recorded his sixth conference shutout with one match remaining. The boys are on track for stoning all the teams in the conference in 2017. Congratulations to Matias for scoring five goals.”
It did not take the Wildcats long to score a goal. Dribbling toward the Timberwolves’ net, Dermond lost the ball to a defender, but Dermond fought, got it back, then launched a rocket from the top of 18-yard box that whizzed past Poellot at 1:33.
Dermond tallied his second goal at 16:11. Donny Jones chipped a pass over the Timberwolves’ defenders. Dermond beat them all to the ball and tapped it into the net.
USM soon made it 3-0. After a foul in the USM half of the field, Joey Wells powered a free kick nearly three quarters of the field. As the ball descended near the Timberwolves’ net, Dermond leaped and headed the ball past Poellot for his hat trick at 21:55.
USM scored one more goal in the first half. As the Wildcats moved en force toward the Timberwolves’ goal, Jones sent a square pass to Cole Wilson. Wilson passed it back to Wells, who thundered a shot into the net at 38:37.
Dermond scored USM’s final two goals in the second half. During a corner kick play at 61:46, he headed in kick to the far post by Jones.
At 63:52, Wells sent a free kick into the Timberwolves’ penalty area. Like a gazelle, Tommy Hayden raced to the ball, and one-timed a shot. The ball hit Poellot and bounced out to Dermond who booted it into the net for USM’s final goal.
USM is now 11-0-1 and 6-0-0 in the Midwest Classic Conference. Before returning to conference play, the Wildcats take on Sectional rival, Saint Anthony, in a non-conference game at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7th at USM.
