Boys Soccer vs. Brookfield Academy

The Wildcats of University School boys’ soccer team won their fourth consecutive shutout by defeating Brookfield Academy 4-0 in a Midwest Classic Conference game on Monday, October 2nd at USM.

The Wildcats made it relatively easy for their goalkeeper, Payton Van Den Heuvel to record his 7th shutout of the season.  He needed to make only two saves as USM allowed the Blue Knights to take a mere 5 total shots in the match.  The Wildcats took 26 shots and kept BA’s goalie, Sam Connor, busy by putting 17 of them on goal.

The Wildcats scored just one goal in the first half.  On the play, Matias Dermond made a run with the ball down the side.  As he moved deep into BA territory, he centered a pass.  Connor came out to try to stop it, but the force of Dermond’s kick caused the ball to carom off the goalkeeper right to Brodie Mutschler, who was speeding toward the net like a lion in anticipation of an easy kill.  Mutschler booted the ball past Connor for what would be the game-winning goal at 18:34.

USM tallied their next three goals in the second half.  The first of these came at 49:00 on a set play.  Donny Jones booted a corner kick into the 6 yard box to Liam Costomiris who skied a shot into the net.

The Wildcats made it 3-0 at 68:14. Mutschler sent a pass to Thomas Wilkinson who was positioned 25 yards from the net.  Wilkinson immediately blasted a shot that sailed like an artillery shell into the back of the BA net.

USM scored the game’s final goal on a sweet give and go play.  Armand Shetty dribbled toward the net and sent a short pass to Sam Mackey.  Mackey took two touches, drawing the attention of the BA defenders. He then returned a pass to Shetty who showed his gratitude by burying a shot in the back of the net at 81:45.

Jock Mutschler, USM’s head coach, said, “Congratulations to Payton and the boys for employing a terrific shape, utilizing excellent communication and displaying tremendous discipline. Payton has yielded a minuscule 4 goals through 11 matches so far. Payton was up to the one and only direct challenge in the match early on in the day when he stretched out to deny BA a goal on a quickly struck free kick.”

Mutschler continued, “The boys brought a vibrant attitude, energy, and approach to today's match. They were ready to do damage right from the opening kick-off. The captains should be applauded for thinking through how we approached the Lake Country Lutheran match (USM’s previous game) and then making some critical adjustments for today.”

“So, by virtue of today's victory,” Mutschler added, “we control our own destiny in the race for the Midwest Classic Conference title. We stand at 5-0, BA at 4-1, Lake Country Lutheran at 3-2 and Living Word Lutheran at 3-2. We simply need to win our last two matches to claim the crown.”

USM is now 10-0-1 overall.  The Wildcats hope to continue their shutout streak when they play Living Word Lutheran in a Midwest Classic Conference game on Wednesday, October 4th at Living Word Lutheran School in Jackson.
