The University School football team used strong defense to defeat Brookfield Academy 23-0 in a Midwest Classic Conference game on Friday, September 29th at Brookfield Academy.
In the contest for second place in the conference, the Wildcats ruined their hosts’ homecoming by holding the Blue Knights to just 126 total yards. The Blue Knights did not complete a pass all night in 6 attempts. One of their passes was intercepted by USM senior Justin Tremmel, and BA also lost the ball on a fumble that led to USM’s first touchdown.
Meanwhile the USM offense gained a total of 271 yards, 196 of the yards on the ground and 75 via the pass. David Hutton, USM’s senior quarterback, was 7-13 during the game. 5 of his 7 passes went to junior Tripp Grebe for 67 yards. Senior Will Kennedy ran for 105 of the Wildcats’ rushing yards in 15 carries. Hutton gained 59 yards in 12 carries, and Tremmel ran the ball 11 times for 29 yards.
“We out gained, outscored, and out hit them,” said Brian Sommers, USM’s head coach. “It was a great team victory. I’m happy for the seniors tonight. We executed on everything we emphasized this week. Our energy level was good, and it was good to see us bounce back after a disappointing loss last week. We always say, ‘the most important play in football is the next play.’ David Hutton showed that tonight. After a bad third down play, he turned around and kicked that 32-yard field goal to put us ahead 10-0.”
A key play in the game occurred in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Sencere Powell recovered a BA fumble on the Blue Knight’s 31 yard line. After an incomplete pass, Kennedy ran around the left side and rumbled through several opposing tacklers to score a 31 yard TD at 9:58. Hutton’s extra point gave the Wildcats a lead they would never relinquish.
The stalwart USM defense forced the Blue Knights to punt on their next possession. Hutton and his crew then used 15 plays to get to the BA 32 yard line with just 4 seconds left in the half. Hutton cooly booted his first field goal of the season, giving the Wildcats’ a 10-0 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Wildcats started with the ball in the second half, and they continued where they’d left off. This time they marched 53 yards in 11 plays for a touchdown, scored on an 8 yard run by Kennedy at 6:12 of the third quarter. Hutton’s extra point improved USM’s lead to 17-0.
USM scored one more time. Hutton threw a 23 yard pass to Grebe for the score at 9:06 of the fourth quarter.
USM is now 4-2 and 3-1 in the Midwest Classic Conference. The Wildcats hope their homecoming will be happier than the one they spoiled Friday. They return to USM to play Living Word Lutheran in a Midwest Classic Conference game at 7:00 on Friday, October 6th.
