Boys Basketball vs. Kenosha Christian Life

The University School boys’ basketball team completed the regular season in fine fashion on Thursday, February 22nd. The Wildcats defeated Kenosha Christian Life 84-48 in a Midwest Classic Conference game at Kenosha Christian Life High School.

USM now heads into the WIAA Division 3 state tournament playoffs.  The way they played on Thursday indicates that they are ready for playoff action.

Early in the game, with the score tied 2-2, Ma’teo Holland sank a three-point shot to put USM ahead for good.

Aided by two other three pointers by Mike Wilson and Keegan Kubicki, the Wildcats then took off on a 16-1 run, which gave them a commanding lead that was never threatened by their hosts.  The USM players dominated the defensive boards, and their tenacious defense in their half of the court allowed them to create a variety of turnovers. USM scored 45 points in the first half, almost as many as the Eagles would score in the whole game.

Sylvester Cutler, USM’s head coach described the game, “We had a little bit of a sluggish first half, but we came out with better energy and focus in the second. I’m proud of the way that we executed on the defensive end of the floor, and we shot the ball well against KCL’s changing defenses. They were a scrappy team that didn’t back down and challenged us to be discipline in our execution."

Wilson led the Wildcats in scoring.  He scored 24 points.  Kubicki and Calvin Schmeling each scored 12 points; Grant Booth scored 9 points; Holland scored 8 points; Tipp Grebe scored 5 points; Sencere Powell and James Graham scored 4 points apiece; and Henry Hartjes scored 2 points for the victors.

Commenting on the end of the regular season, Cutler said, “It has been a great season, I’m proud of the way this team has come together and the success we have enjoyed, we are peaking at the right time so we are looking forward to playoffs.”

USM is 18-4 and finished at 13-2 in the Midwest Classic Conference. The Wildcats play Milwaukee Carmen Northwest School of Science and Technology NW in a WIAA state tournament Regional game on Tuesday, February 27th at USM at 7:00 pm.
