Girls Basketball vs Milwaukee Carmen School of Science and Technology NW

The University School girls’ basketball team defeated Milwaukee Carmen School of Science and Technology Northwest 58-33 in a WIAA Division 3 state tournament Sectional 4 Regional Semi-Final game on Tuesday, February 20th at USM.

The Wildcats, who are seeded 7th in the sectional, hosted the Carmen team, which came into the game as the underdog, seeded 10th in the sectional. As a result of the win, the Wildcats advance in the state tournament playoffs.  They face the number 2 seed, St. Thomas More, in their next contest.

The USM players proved the deserved the higher seed.  Alexia Jaso, one of USM’s captains, explained, “I think overall we played pretty well. It was kind of rushed at the start, but we managed to settle down and get back into playing our type of game.”

As their captain noted, the Wildcats settled into their way of playing successful basketball. They soon took control of the affair.  They dominated the boards and begin sinking a variety of shots.  10 different players scored for USM.  Aidanne DePoy led the Wildcats with 18 points. Taylor Janssen scored 12 points; Tunmi Omoloja scored 10 points; Maddie Meinecke, Ayorkor Aryeetey, and Jaso scored 4 points apiece; Ellie Norman and Veronica Castro each scored 2 points; and NaaAyeley Aryeetey and Laine Bolton each scored a point.

After the game Jason Strains, USM’s head coach, looked ahead and said, “It's always great to get a playoff win, but we have lots to work on before Friday. We did a great job of crashing the boards and being aggressive defensively. However, we need to do a much better job of taking care of the ball. I know we are going to put in some hard work and be ready to go by Friday.”

The victory improved USM’s record to 13-10. The Wildcats now face St. Thomas More in a WIAA Division 3 state tournament Sectional 4 Regional Final game at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23rd at St. Thomas More High School in Milwaukee.
